Client: Confidential, Germany

Location: Ramnicu Sarat, Romania

Sector: Renewable Energies – Wind Turbines

AUDITECO was retained by Client from Germany to perform a Preliminary Environmental Assessment at a site located near Ramnicu-Sarat (Buzau County, Romania) where a wind farm was going to be built.

The objectives of the Preliminary Environmental Assessment were to determine, on a preliminary basis, the key facts, the issues and the concerns that may represent potential environmental liabilities associated to the site from Ramnicu Sarat area and also to record habitats and ecological features (ornithology, mammals, invertebrates, reptiles and amphibians) on the site in order to determine the need for any protected species surveys.

The Preliminary Environmental Assessment was conducted on an area of 2,500 ha, mainly represented by agricultural land, with wetlands, small lakes, irrigation and drainage channels, small clumps of trees.

The methodology for monitoring biodiversity consisted of desktop activities and several field monitoring campaigns for habitats and species of plants, birds, mammals, invertebrates, reptiles and amphibians.

The results of the assessment were used to generate an ecological sensitivity preliminary map of the target site, in which sensitive areas and less sensitive areas where highlighted, so that the best options for locating the wind turbines could be selected, the ones with the least significant impact upon biodiversity.
